The North Shore of Long Island is known as the "Gold Coast," given its stretch of opulent mansions that have been home to some of America's wealthiest families. The Heritage Trail
One of the reasons I was drawn to the North Shore was because of its rich history, so I knew I wanted to spend time exploring the Heritage Trail, which passes sprawling mansions (the likes of which inspired the setting of "The Great Gatsby"), Theodore Roosevelt's summer home, and many former estates that have been converted for public use. Because of this, I was able to stroll the grounds and gardens of gorgeous estates that were once home to the families of America's elite.
The Beach
Naturally, I couldn't visit the North Shore of Long Island without spending some time on the beach. The beaches in the North Shore are a bit rockier and more secluded than the ones on the South Shore, but they are still beautiful and peaceful. And, since it was just a short drive away, I later hopped over to the South Shore so that I could experience the best beaches on Long Island. After a full day of beach hopping, I was relaxed, happy, tired and, unfortunately, a bit sunburnt.
Wineries
When you think of Long Island, you probably don't immediately think of wineries, but Long Island has a surprisingly exciting wine country. Since my hotel was located near a cluster of wineries, I decided to spend one afternoon wine tasting and actually discovered that Long Island wine is quite excellent. Plus, the atmosphere and environment of these picturesque wineries made it an afternoon to remember, and by the end of the day I was sad at the thought of leaving Long Island to travel back to the city.
