HotelTonight – Shaw Washington, D.C. Hotels
There are many different aspects to Washington, D.C., and all of them are integral components to what makes it such a special place. I have been there many times, and the first couple of visits consisted of seeing all of the famous places that the city has to offer. I felt awe and exhilaration as I toured the White House, saw the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial and wandered by Congress. I also felt curious about the people who live in Washington, D.C. and make it tick. I wanted to explore the neighborhoods to gain a deeper perspective on this unique place. When I travel here for work now, I schedule my return flight for 24 hours after my meetings are finished. That gives me an entire day to explore a new place. I choose one neighborhood to spend my time in on each trip. For my last trip there, I decided to spend my 24 hours in the Shaw neighborhood. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, either, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. It would find me a Shaw Washington, D.C. hotel when I was ready for one.
The History
Shaw is one of Washington, D.C.'s oldest neighborhoods, as it's been settled continuously since the 19th Century. You immediately see the history that exists here when you step out of your vehicle. What Shaw is mostly known for is its legendary performers from the past who once called this part of town their professional home. Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey and Duke Ellington all used to perform here regularly, and you can still see statues and remnants of their time here as you walk around. I could hardly have imagined having the opportunity to see any of those icons, let alone all three of them.
The Development
Even though Shaw is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, it's also one of the most popular these days. There is a lot of redevelopment happening here and there are a lot of young professionals moving here. Fortunately, the new buildings that I saw seemed to match what was already there, and the refurbishing being done on some of the old buildings is being done carefully so that their original looks are protected and preserved. It's nice to see development done the right way.
The Food
Given all of the culture and devotion to the arts here, it was no surprise to see a lot of restaurants here as well. Food is part of culture, and I was told about a new place that served some of the best Mexican food around. I was in the mood for that type of feast, so I went there and ordered a carnitas plate. The pork was scrumptious, the tortillas were warm and tasty and the salsas were hot and spicy but not to the point where they dominated the flavor. It was delicious.
