HotelTonight – Capitol Riverfront Washington, D.C. Hotels Are Available

Washington, D.C. is a city with a lot of different layers. The most obvious and well-known layer is the one with all of the historic monuments and sites that people come from all over the world on a daily basis to see and experience. There is also the working layer which consists of the daily government business that may not be aesthetically pleasing but that is necessary. Then there is the relatively unknown layer, that being the one that involves daily lives and the tapestry of little communities that make up this large metropolis. I've always been more interested in that aspect of things than anything else. I recently had an opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for 24 hours, and I had a choice to make. Either I could run around and try to see the whole city in a day or I could choose one part of town and explore that. I chose the latter, and the neighborhood that I chose was Capitol Riverfront. I wasn't worried about lodging. I traveled with the HotelTonight app. It would help me find a Capitol Riverfront Washington DC hotel room as soon as I needed one.

The Development

For decades, the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood was not really a neighborhood. It was a navy yard just south of the capitol itself and was more of a wharf than anything else along the Anacostia River. Over the past 20 years or so, as the city has grown, a lot of development has gone on in this part of town, and what you see now is a bustling, young and gorgeous area that's filled with people from all walks of life. You're just as likely to see older folks enjoying day trips as you are young professionals or families hustling through their routines.

The Water

The river is not just something that exists here and that is something nice to look at, but it's an integral part of the lifestyle in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. I saw countless people renting kayaks nearby, spending some time on the water and seeing the area from a unique point of view. There were also a lot of people wading in the river on the warm day I was there and there was a dramatic bridge where I was told is where a lot of concerts occur.

The Cuisine

It seems natural that a developing neighborhood also features an oncoming restaurant scene. That is definitely the case in Capitol Riverfront. I was starving after a full day of walking around and seeing things, so I wanted a nice cold beer and a big hamburger. I found both at a gastropub that was filled with locals. The hamburger I had was scrumptious, as it was topped with crispy bacon and a tomato and lettuce so fresh it could've almost made its own BLT. The beer hit the spot as well.
