HotelTonight – First Ward Hotels in Buffalo

Some Buffalo locals will say that the First Ward was not only instrumental to the development of Buffalo, but also to the development of the entire country. This historic neighborhood is home to many iconic buildings and sites in Buffalo, but it's also home to cutting-edge restaurants and hip new watering holes. Since I love neighborhoods that seamlessly blend the old with the new, I decided to book my Buffalo hotel in the First Ward. To find a great hotel in the area, I simply checked out HotelTonight's selection of hotels in Buffalo. Within minutes on the HotelTonight app, I had booked a fantastic hotel right near the heart of First Ward. Just a few hours later, I had checked into my hotel room and was ready to start exploring this historic neighborhood on foot.

Irish Heritage

Buffalo's First Ward is a traditionally Irish neighborhood, which is why it hosts the beloved annual Shamrock Run and the Old Neighborhood Saint Patrick's Day Parade. The First Ward was also the birthplace of some of Buffalo's most notable Irish residents, including Jimmy Slattery and Michael Shea. So if you want to find an authentic Irish pub in Buffalo, you'll definitely need to check out the First Ward. And, of course, if you're in Buffalo around Saint Patrick's Day, you won't want to miss seeing the decorations and festivities in this lively neighborhood.

Buffalo River

The First Ward is adjacent to the Buffalo River, which is why it's an especially popular neighborhood to visit during the warmer months. Summer transforms the First Ward into a hotspot for outdoor activities, including kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Also, many of the bars and restaurants open up their patios, where locals enjoy al fresco dining and beautiful views of the river.

Elevator Alley

Back in the 1840s, Irish immigrants built the First Ward around the canals, and the area was a hub for the country's grain industry. Because of this, the First Ward is full of old grain elevators, which you can see by boat via the canal or on foot. The collection of grain elevators is now known as Elevator Alley, and it remains an important part of Buffalo's history and identity as a working class community. After all, it was the grain trade that spurred Buffalo's growth, transforming it into the bustling city it is today.
