Baltimore is one of the most historic cities in the United States. You'll find more historic sites here than just about anywhere else in the country, and that's due in part because of the care people in Charm City have dedicated to these buildings and locations. Entire neighborhoods have been declared historic districts there, and I wanted to take some time to visit all of them. I had the opportunity to do so every now and then, as my job takes me to Baltimore a few times every year. What I do is extend my trip by 24 hours so that I have an entire day to myself to explore. Rather than trying to see as much as possible in as little time as possible, I choose one neighborhood and spend all of my time there. On my last trip, I decided to spend my 24 free hours in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay. The History
As I mentioned, there are some entire neighborhoods that have been declared as federal historic districts. Mount Vernon is one of them. As soon as you start walking around here, you can immediately understand how that came to be. The homes here are seemingly from another era, and that's because they are. The brick row houses are about as tasteful as any type of building you'll see, and I filled my camera walking around taking photos. You can just feel the old-time charm here, which may be one of the reasons that Baltimore got its nickname.
The Modernity
Just because Mount Vernon is historic doesn't mean that it's some type of staid, stuffy or boring place where you're afraid to touch anything or have fun. Mount Vernon is anything but that. It's a vibrant, lively community that's filled with young professionals and older adults who are either retired or close to it and who want to have fun themselves. You can see it out on the streets here. The shops are full of patrons, the restaurants are jammed and the pubs are crowded and loud. People walk around and greet each other in the streets with a zest that's impossible to miss.
The Dining
You can't come to this lovely city and not enjoy the seafood, particularly the legendary delicacy that is the blue crab. I asked some people where I could find such a place, and a nice lady told me about a little restaurant that served the freshest blue crabs she had tasted. As it turns out, she was absolutely right. The blue crab was delectable, and worth every ounce of effort to get yourself close to the meat. I ate too much of this rich meat, but didn't care.
