Located in downtown Phoenix, the Willo Historic District gleams with charm and old, beautifully maintained homes. This neighborhood was built as a suburb in the 1920s, but today it's considered more of an urban neighborhood due to its close proximity to the heart of downtown. The Willo Historic District is a very walkable neighborhood, and you can access almost anything you need on foot, which is why it's such a desirable neighborhood for locals. During my recent trip to Phoenix, I needed to stay somewhere close to downtown, but I didn't want to stay in the center of a bustling metropolis. So thanks to some advice from Phoenix locals, I booked a hotel in the Willo Historic District. Historic Homes
Locals know that the Willo Historic District is primarily known for one thing--its historic homes. Willo is full of quaint, historic homes that have made it one of the most unique and beloved neighborhoods in Phoenix. One of the first things I did during my stay in Willo was wander the streets on foot and admire the beautiful architecture of these old homes. Some of the architectural styles I saw in the neighborhood were Tudor, Bungalow and Spanish, many of which were built in the 1920s and 1930s. I also learned that every year, Willo residents open their homes up to the public to showcase the beautiful architecture of these old homes, which I thought was a lovely local tradition that makes this neighborhood feel like a real, tight-knit community.
The Art Scene
Willo happens to be located in one of the best areas for the arts in Phoenix, and it's nearby a number of museums and performing arts venues, such as the Phoenix Art Museum, the Heard Museum, and the Phoenix Theatre. The Arizona School for the Arts is also right down the street, so you'll find yourself surrounded with the fine arts while in Willo. Since I love the arts, I popped into a few of the local museums and also caught a show that night at the theater, just like I would if I actually lived in Willo.
Encanto Park
I believe that every great neighborhood should have a beautiful public park, and this downtown area certainly does. Just a short walk away from Willo's historic streets is Encanto Park, a 222-acre public park featuring recreation areas, a lagoon, golf courses, a swimming pool and even an amusement park. There's so much to do in Encanto Park, you could spend an entire day here.
