HotelTonight – Faubourg Marigny New Orleans Hotel Rooms
When you spend time in New Orleans, Louisiana, you tend to take a small piece of it with you for the rest of your life. That's how I feel about the Crescent City, and I have spoken to many others over the years who absolutely agree with that sentiment. Every time I've traveled there, I've had a great time, enjoyed great meals and talked with great people. What I've never done, though, is really take some time to get to know the Big Easy from the perspective of what daily life is like there. I have wanted to do that for years. I recently decided that every time I travel to New Orleans for whatever reason, I would take 24 hours and explore just one specific neighborhood during that time. On my last trip, I decided to spend those 24 hours in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. I had never really been there, so I was looking forward to seeing it. I wasn't concerned about lodging, either, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. It would find me a Faubourg Marigny New Orleans hotel room as soon as I was ready for one.
One of the first things you encounter when you get out of your car and start walking around Faubourg Marigny is the historic feel that you get. I walked into a café and started a conversation with a local resident, and I found out that the neighborhood dates back to the early years of the 19th century. In 1806, a wealthy family decided to sell off a huge tract of land and to subdivide it. Since then, the area has grown slowly but steadily, and it's done so with a unique flair that had me convinced that I was walking around in some French town.
While the neighborhood dates back a long way and it grew slowly and steadily for generations, it also fell on hard times during the middle of the 20th century as more and more people began to flock to exterior suburban developments. Recently, however, residences have been undergoing renovations on a large scale and even the small commercial buildings here have been getting tasteful facelifts. What's there now is what was likely there 75 years ago in a sense. It's a gorgeous place that has retained that small-town feel in the middle of a big city.
Faubourg Marigny is one of the neighborhoods in New Orleans where you can do the same things that are done in tourist parts of town, only with locals. I heard about a restaurant that served traditional New Orleans fare but with the accompaniment of jazz music. I decided to eat there and was glad I did so. The rabbit I had was perfectly slow-cooked and seasoned. The sides that included delicious potatoes and cornbread were perfect, and the music was sublime.
