HotelTonight – LoDo Denver Hotels
Denver is a city that is a lot of things to a lot of people. It's home to millions of residents, a destination for millions of visitors every year and considered by many to be the unofficial capital of the Mountain West region of the United States. It's special in a lot of different ways. I've always enjoyed visiting Denver, but never really had the opportunity to spend time there as a visitor. I was always working the whole time while in town. I wanted to change all of that recently and did so by scheduling my return flight from my last work meeting for 24 hours after finishing those obligations. That gave me an entire day to explore. I wanted to focus on one neighborhood instead of trying to see everything in one day, so I chose to spend that time in the neighborhood of LoDo. I had heard a lot about it and was excited to delve deeply into it. I wasn't worried about accommodations, either, as I travel with HotelTonight. I'd be able to book a LoDo Denver hotel room in seconds when I was ready.
LoDo is a shortened term to describe Lower Downtown, and it is the oldest neighborhood in Denver. It consists of about 25 square blocks, and you can see the history as you walk through it. Some of the buildings are well over 100 years old, with some dating back to the time of the Old West. There's a feel in this part of town that tends to tip a proverbial cap to days gone by, both by way of the architecture here and the layout of the streets. It's something that has to be seen to be understood.
The Arts Community
Another thing I noticed immediately when in LoDo was the thriving artist community that's present there. It seemed like you couldn't walk more than a block without seeing at least one art gallery. I love art, so I spent a lot of time walking through several of them. The paintings I saw had quite a bit of local flavor in them, in that there were some gorgeous landscape pieces that spoke directly to the wondrous areas in and around Denver. I lost myself in these galleries for quite some time.
Every downtown area in a big city has restaurants, but I don't recall a downtown with quite so many or one with quite so many different choices. After all the walking around I had done that day, I was in the mood for a big, juicy western steak. A local told me about a little place just up the road from where I was, and as soon as that enormous, delicious cut of meat was put in front of me I was happy to have chosen it. It was tender, juicy, smoky and perfect.
