San Jose, California is one of those cities that is a lot of fun to explore. There are so many different areas in this community that you could spend a day in each of the different neighborhoods and never really experience the same thing twice. That had been my experience. I had fallen in love with San Jose years ago, and since that time I always make sure that when I'm out there for work, I book my return flight for 24 hours after my work responsibilities are done whenever possible. I had one of those opportunities arise again recently, and I decided that I would spend those extra 24 hours exploring the Naglee Park neighborhood. I had heard a lot about it but had only seen signs referring to it until this most recent trip. I wasn't worried about lodging, as I never am when I travel anymore. That's because I have the HotelTonight app, and I was sure it would help me find a Naglee Park San Jose hotel room as soon as I was ready to turn in for the night.
The Location
When I travel in most big cities, I assume that the downtown area is one that is going to be almost exclusively filled with high-rises, apartment buildings, offices and basically concrete and steel. For the most part, this belief is correct based on my experience. However, Naglee Park put a dent in that belief. This is a neighborhood that is right next to downtown San Jose, but you'd never know it when you look at all of the nice family homes that are here, when you watch all of the people walking their dogs and talking to each other and when you see what you'd swear was a suburban neighborhood.
The History
One of the reasons that this neighborhood continues to exist in this form is because of its history. Brigadier General Henry M. Naglee used to own his estate here, and that estate became basically what is now the neighborhood that bears his name. There are a lot of homes and other buildings that are designated as historic by different entities, and you can tell when you walk around that the homes are old but sturdy, aged but extremely well-maintained.
The University
Another reason that this neighborhood exists could be because of San Jose State University, which is near a lot of these homes. Campus neighborhoods tend to be a bit different from many 'traditional' city neighborhoods, and the campus at San Jose State University is about as lovely and bucolic as a university campus can get. I spent a couple of hours walking around and enjoying the sights before purchasing some memorabilia to commemorate this day.
