HotelTonight – Newport, Oregon Hotels

I've seen just about everything there is to see when it comes to coastlines around the world. I'm fortunate in that my work takes me to just about every continent at some point during the year, and I enjoy all of the travel. I particularly enjoy coastlines, as they are almost always places of great serenity and beauty. However, I must confess that after a while, many of them start to look similar. That is, of course, until you get to Oregon. Whenever I'm in the Pacific Northwest, I'm traveling between cities by car, and I'm driving up and down the Oregon coast. It's unique, it's breathtaking and it's always worth the extra time it takes to get there. Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to actually explore any of these small communities. That all changed recently. I had a day of meetings cancel as I was driving down the Oregon coast, so I excitedly decided to spend my 24 hours exploring the city of Newport. I wasn't worried about the details, particularly lodging, as I travel with HotelTonight. I'd book a Newport, Oregon hotel room as soon as I was ready to crash.

The Town

I couldn't wait to get a closer look at this city of just over 10,000 people. As soon as I pulled into town, I knew I was somewhere special. This was the quintessential seaside community. The buildings were mostly made of wood and all very quaint, the entire town was centered on the water and everything looked very festive even though it was not a holiday when I was there. The people themselves were extremely friendly to me and to each other. It was clear that there was a strong sense of community in this place, and that's something I always notice and admire.

The Marine Life

I've always wanted to see what life was like under the sea, but I've never been brave enough to pick up SCUBA. In Newport, you don't have to be a diver to see what's happening under the surface of the sea. There's a place there that has an underwater walkway, which is basically a clear tube built under the water for you to walk around in and check out the marine life. I'm not sure I've ever been so fascinated, but I spent hours there taking photos and just having all sorts of fun.

The Dining

There was no way I was eating anything but seafood for dinner after seeing all of that. Of course, there was no shortage of choices for me in that regard. A lady told me about a place right on the water that served fish and chips made with local halibut. I had to give it a try. It was a big piece of fish that was a bit more lightly breaded than what I was used to in other parts of the world, but it was also delicious. I had a nice Oregon wine to go with it and my meal was complete.

HotelTonight – Hotels in Newport, Oregon
