Montana's capital city, Helena, is one of the most charming, picturesque towns I've visited in a long time. Nestled in between two of the country's most stunning national parks, Yellowstone and Glacier, Helena is a great place to stay for those exploring the great outdoors. And while there's no doubt that Helena has plenty of beautiful natural sites to offer, there's also so much to do and see in the town itself. With its idyllic streets and welcoming community, Helena won me over as soon as I arrived. I was especially glad that I chose to stay in downtown Helena, which put me smack dab in the middle of the action and excitement – and finding a hotel in downtown Helena was simple. The Walking Mall
I love staying in downtown neighborhoods when I travel, because I prefer to see a city on foot rather than from a car. That's why I loved downtown Helena – it was so pedestrian friendly that I was able to walk to any restaurant, shop, or bar that I wanted to check out. The downtown Walking Mall in Helena is a pedestrian-only avenue that is lined with shops and restaurants, and it's where locals go to enjoy a nice meal and a lively environment.
The Gulch
The Gulch is the Historic District of Helena, which is where miners originally camped out and helped build Helena from the ground up. If you want to get a feel for the rich history and culture of Helena, you should take a stroll through The Gulch. This district is also home to a number of popular restaurants and unique shops, which are perfect spots to find one-of-a-kind souvenirs from Helena.
Entertainment
When it comes to Helena's entertainment scene, downtown is the best neighborhood in the city. Downtown is home to entertainment venues like the Grandstreet Theatre and the lively Great Northern Town Center. If you're lucky enough to be in town for one of Helena's community events, such as a fair or a market, you'll be able to get a great idea why locals absolutely love their charming town. There's a strong sense of community in Helena, and you can feel it everywhere you go in downtown.

I didn't know what to expect from Helena before I arrived. I knew it was a relatively small capital city, and that its big draw was all of the national parks nearby. However, within hours of arriving in Helena, I had fallen in love with the charm and lively atmosphere of the city. This town should be viewed as so much more than just a home base for national park trips, because Helena offers plenty of things to do and see on its own.
