HotelTonight – Hays Hotels Are Available

Interstate 70 is about as straight a path between two large cities, as you'll find in the United States. My sales territory ranges from Kansas City to Denver, so I know I-70 about as well as anyone considering I'm driving on it all the time. I actually enjoy the drive, as you get to relax and lose yourself in your thoughts in the cornfields of Kansas and then drive upward as you move into the Rocky Mountains. Whenever I get a chance to re-calibrate my thoughts on I-70, I emerge from my car ready to go for the next meeting. The only regret I've been noticing with myself lately is that I've never really taken any time to get to know any of the communities that sit between Kansas City and Denver. Recently, I got a call that there was some very bad weather to the west of me, in the direction I was heading, and that I should stop for the day. I was near Hays, so I figured I'd spend the day exploring. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I travel with HotelTonight. I'd book a Hays hotel room, as soon as I needed one.

The University

Hays may be a small city, as only around 21,000 people live there, but it's home to a very well-known university in Fort Hays State. I started my free day by taking a look at the campus, and it was larger than I thought. More than 12,000 students are enrolled there, so it's more than half as big as the city that surrounds it. The open squares on campus were lovely, the architecture was attractive, and the students I spoke to were quite friendly and happy. This was a nice place to go to school and live.

Downtown

After spending a few hours on campus, I wanted to see the city itself, so I headed downtown. If you could paint a portrait of "Middle America" and encompass all of its best qualities, that's what you'd fine in Hays. Downtown is filled with older buildings that have been well maintained, none of them are very tall and everything is very clean. The people who were walking around all seemed familiar and comfortable with each other, and they could not have been nicer to me as I talked with them and asked them a few questions.

The Dining

A couple of people, when I asked about restaurants, told me about a local chicken place that's been doing business for over 70 years. I had to give it a try. It looks like an old house from the outside, and it certainly isn't fancy, but the smells inside were captivating. I had the chicken-fried chicken, which was served with a nice white gravy. It was fantastic. The breading was nice and flavorful and crispy, and the gravy was creamy and savory. It was served with skinny fries and overall was a great meal.
