Chances are, you've never heard of the town Newell in West Virginia. After all, this small town has a population of just over a thousand, and it's certainly not one of the most popular vacation destinations in the country. However, I discovered Newell to have a certain charm that you only find in small towns, which is why I enjoyed spending time here. Of course, there's so much to do and see in the surrounding areas of West Virginia and Ohio, so you won't be bored if you stay near Newell. Historic Sights
Even though Newell is a very small town, it's still home to a handful of notable historic sights. For instance, the famous horse racetrack and casino, Waterford Park, has been a local institution since 1951. Today, the venue is called the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort, and it still hosts regular horse races. Another local historic site is the William E. Wells House, which was built in 1907 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The beautifully preserved historic house is worth a visit if you find yourself in Newell.
Chester
One of the nearby West Virginia towns is Chester, which is located just east of Newell. The atmosphere in Chester is similar to Newell, but it has a bit more of a central town area, so it's an interesting place to visit if you want to see unique sights like the Chester teapot, which happens to be the largest teapot in the world. The city is also home to the largest coal slurry waste impound in the country.
East Liverpool
Just across the Newell Toll Bridge is East Liverpool, Ohio. Once named the "Pottery Capital of the World" for its high output of ceramics, East Liverpool is now where many Newell locals work. After all, there's a larger, busier downtown district in East Liverpool, and here you'll find a number of shops and restaurants. You'll find locals from both Ohio and West Virginia in East Liverpool, and it'll give you a great feel for what daily life is like in this region of the country.
