HotelTonight – Last-Minute Hotels in Kelso Washington
Kelso is a small town in southwest Washington, and it's located near the beautiful Mount St. Helens, so there are countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors while in Kelso. That's why I originally decided to visit Kelso – I wanted to spend a few days enjoying beautiful natural scenery rather than the concrete buildings I see on a daily basis. My craving for the great outdoors led me to the Pacific Northwest, and on a whim I chose to visit Kelso. Just like that, I was ready to escape the city and find beauty and adventure in the Pacific Northwest.
Historic Landmarks
Kelso was founded in the 1880s, and locals are quite proud of their city's history. In fact, you can visit many historic landmarks throughout Kelso, three of which are on the National Register of Historic Places: the Adam Catlin House, the Nat Smith House and the US Post Office on Main. And, of course, you can also visit the Cowlitz County Historical Museum to learn more about the area's history, which I actually found quite fascinating and well worth a visit.
Recreation
The main reason I visited Kelso was for its easy access to natural beauty, and I definitely was not disappointed. All within an easy drive from Kelso, you'll find terrific hiking, biking, boating, hunting, fishing and skiing during the winter. I also made sure to visit Mount St. Helens while in the region, since I wanted to get a glimpse of this legendary active volcano, I decided to go on a hike along one of the mountain's many trails, and the stunning views were definitely worth the trek.
Downtown
Kelso's downtown area is a sleepy little neighborhood, so you won't find a ton of locals and visitors milling about its streets. That being said, there's still a certain charm to downtown, as it's home to old brick buildings and cute little storefronts. I had a few meals in downtown Kelso, and I loved soaking in the small town feel of the neighborhoods. It was so different from my everyday life, and it definitely provided a welcome change of pace.

I never expected to end up in the small town of Kelso, Washington, but I was glad that I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to visit. There were so many things to do and see around Kelso that I was never bored, and I loved the slower-paced way of life in Kelso. Of course, I also couldn't get enough of the area's natural beauty, which had me in awe from the moment I arrived. I hope to visit the Pacific Northwest again in the near future, and no matter which city I decide to visit next, I'll be sure to book my hotel through HotelTonight.
