HotelTonight – Last-Minute Hotels in Bellingham Washington
The cozy community of Bellingham, Washington is located near the Canadian border, and it's one of the northernmost cities in the country. Its unique location and beautiful natural surroundings provide residents with a high quality of life, and Bellingham locals really can't seem to say enough good things about their city. I recently had the chance to explore Bellingham for a couple of days, and I jumped at the chance. I booked my Bellingham hotel on my HotelTonight app, which has become my go-to resource for finding great deals on last-minute hotels when I travel. Once I checked into my Bellingham hotel, I set out to explore this charming city along Bellingham Bay.
The Cultural Arts District
Many people haven't heard of the town of Bellingham, so it may be surprising to learn that the city actually has quite a vibrant arts community. The Cultural Arts District boasts a number of restaurants, studios, boutiques and galleries that give the town its strong cultural flare. I was lucky enough to be in town during the Downtown Art Walk, a monthly event where local artists showcase their work to the public in a lively community event. Strolling through the Art Walk gave me an immediate sense for the spirit of the community, and I loved the atmosphere and energy I felt throughout the city.
Bellingham may be a smaller city, but it offers great higher education, which is why it is often referred to as a college town. Some of the universities in the area include Western Washington University, Trinity Western University, and Bellingham Technical College. I loved exploring the beautiful campus of Western Washington University, which has a student population of about 15,000. The excitement and energy throughout campus and the surrounding neighborhoods is palpable, and I loved trying to see the city of Bellingham through a young, optimistic student's eyes.
Given its location in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Bellingham is an ideal place for outdoor recreation. Nearby, you'll find the North Cascades mountain range, the Salish Sea and a number of lakes and rivers. So during the summer months, Bellingham locals enjoy great hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking and fishing, and during the winter months they're close to some truly exceptional skiing. After spending a day exploring Bellingham's natural surroundings, I understood just why so many locals feel that they live in the best city in the country.
