HotelTonight – Last-Minute Hotels in South Boston

It could be argued that no residents of Boston have stronger pride in their neighborhood than South Boston locals, and I noticed the community pride and culture almost immediately during my recent stay in South Boston. Locals refer to this large, dense area of Boston as "Southie," and it has become one of my favorite neighborhoods in Boston because of its deep roots and its Irish charm. On a recent business trip to Boston, I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to stay in South Boston, as opposed to in the heart of downtown, because I wanted to get a better feel for the Boston that locals know and love. To book my last-minute hotel in South Boston, I simply pulled up my HotelTonight app and within minutes I had booked a great hotel room in the heart of the historic, culturally rich neighborhood of South Boston.

Dorchester Heights

Dorchester Heights may be South Boston's best-known district, as it played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War. Situated high on a hill, Dorchester Heights (now commonly known as Thomas Park) boasts sweeping views of downtown and the harbor, which is why it was ideal location to fortify during the Revolutionary War. Today, you can visit the monument at Dorchester Heights and enjoy the breathtaking vistas of Boston, but you can also wander through the surrounding blocks, which are full of beautiful old homes and lively commercial streets.

The Beaches

When you think of Boston, the last thing you picture is probably the beach. However, South Boston offers some truly phenomenal beaches, which is why Southie is the place to be on Boston's warm summer days. I asked a few locals to point me toward their favorite beaches in South Boston, and they recommended M Street Beach (affectionately nicknamed "Southie Beach"), Pleasure Bay and Carson Beach. Since I didn't have enough time in Boston to explore all of the best beaches, I decided to check out the lively, youthful M Street Beach, and I was a bit surprised at just how many locals were out enjoying the sun, the sand and the sea.

Fort Point

As one of Boston's most beloved artists' communities, Fort Point is a creative hub that blends the old with the new. During the colonial times, this neighborhood featured a large fort that guarded the city. Today, it's home to hundreds of artists from all different backgrounds, so I spent an entire afternoon walking past warehouses that have been transformed into artists' studios, art galleries, theaters and public art installations. If you enjoy the arts, you shouldn't miss the chance to explore Fort Point during your stay in Boston.

HotelTonight – South Boston Hotels at a Glance

Even though I only had a few days to really explore this large, historic district of Boston, I was able to get a great feel for the daily lives of locals during my short stay. It didn't take me long to understand the depth of love locals have for their neighborhood, and I could see why--South Boston is a diverse, exciting and proud neighborhood, and I certainly hope to return some day in the future. When I do return to South Boston, I'll be sure to book my last-minute Boston hotel through HotelTonight.
