There's a little bit of everything in the South Texas city of Harlingen. This vibrant little town is a haven for outdoors enthusiasts, but it also offers a surprisingly impressive arts and entertainment scene. I didn't know much about Harlingen prior to my recent trip, so I didn't know that there was so much to see and do in this town. Walking down the palm tree-lined Jackson Street, which serves as Harlingen's Main Street, will make you realize why Harlingen locals love their town so much. This quaint downtown is home to great shops and restaurants, and you can find plenty of unique little specialty stores, art galleries and eateries on this stretch. Also, downtown Harlingen is the heart of activity in this town, and regular community events are held downtown, such as Movie Nights, Walking Tours and Market Days.
The Outdoors
Harlingen is blessed with year-round tropical weather, which is why locals love enjoying the great outdoors no matter the time of year. Given its location in the Rio Grande Valley, Harlingen is ideally situated for hiking, bird watching, hunting and fishing, so people travel from all over the South to enjoy a bit of fun and adventure outdoors in Harlingen. Of course, Harlingen is also home to a number of great walking trails, public parks and beautiful golf courses, so there are plenty of reasons to get outside while you're in Harlingen.
Beaches
The beaches of the Gulf of Mexico are just a short drive away from Harlingen, so I decided to take a quick day trip to South Padre Island during my stay in Harlingen. This beach boasts a long stretch of sparkling white sand and bright blue waters, and it's a popular place for surfing, windsurfing, dolphin watching and horseback riding. You may not immediately think of beaches when you think of Texas, but once you visit Harlingen, that may change.

Harlingen may not be one of Texas' most popular vacation destinations, but it's definitely worth mentioning. This lovely little town provides an ideal getaway for anyone interested in the outdoors, and I loved spending most of my time outside in the warm tropical sunshine. There's so much to do and see in Harlingen that I don't think it's possible to be bored, which is another reason why locals adore their town so much. I'm certainly glad that I had the chance to visit Harlingen, and it wouldn't have been as easy or as fun if I weren't able to rely on HotelTonight to help me find a great last-minute hotel in Harlingen.
