HotelTonight – Cannon Beach Hotels
If you haven't been there in-person, you've seen photos of it – the Oregon coastline is as iconic as it is stunning. The rocky formations that seem to melt into the surf behind it have created some of the most beautiful photos, paintings and other works of art modern man has ever seen. Until recently, I was one of the many people who had only seen photos of this beach, and I had vowed more than once to change all of that if I ever got the opportunity. On my last business trip to Portland, that opportunity arose. I had a whole day of meetings cancel before I was due to fly out the following day, and that gave me 24 hours of time for myself. I had already seen and enjoyed Portland many times, so I decided to make the short drive to the coast to spend my day in Cannon Beach. I would just stay there that night and catch my flight the next day. The Beach
I found myself so excited about seeing this incredible beach that I could barely park the car when I got there. When I got out, I found some stairs that led down to the water, and I almost ran down them. When I arrived on the sand, my excitement was justified, as I was mesmerized. There was Haystack Rock, that triangle-like rock formation that's the most famous on the beach. It was even more beautiful up-close. I took a lot of photos of it and then spent hours just walking around and taking in the beauty from that perspective.
The Hiking
I didn't want to just spend the day on the sand watching and smelling the surf, although that would have been a fine way to spend the day. I wanted to see more of the area. I was wearing hiking shoes, and that was a good idea, as there were a lot of different trails around. I chose one that took me up, around and about the entire area, providing me with indescribable panoramas of the ocean, the beach and the quaint community that's built nearby. I forgot myself for several more hours doing this.
The Cuisine
After all of that exercise and excitement, I was famished. I had talked to some folks in town after leaving the trail, and they told me about a local tavern that served really good seafood. I walked in and found a place that was comfortable but not fancy. I ordered the oyster burger, and what looked like a crab cake turned out to be one of the tastiest treats I had enjoyed in quite some time. You could almost taste the surf from which the oysters came, and the local brew they served with it was delicious.
