HotelTonight – Taos Hotels Just for You

When I mention Taos to people, most I've spoken to immediately think of skiing. That's an accurate thought to encounter, as Taos is home to some of the best skiing in the United States. I used to think of Taos as a ski resort, as well, but I had never really been there. I've driven through New Mexico many times, but Taos is slightly off the beaten path in northern New Mexico and I've never driven past it. One day recently, however, I was driving on Interstate 25 between Colorado Springs and Albuquerque when I got a call from my home office. My entire day of meetings had been canceled, so I could do what I wanted with the next 24 hours. I decided it was time to see Taos. It was summer, so I wasn't going to ski, but I wanted to see the community. I would spend the day there exploring. I wasn't concerned about finding a place to stay, either, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. When I was done with my day, I'd simply book a Taos hotel room within seconds on the app and be all set.

The Adobe

I'm not sure I've ever seen adobe buildings in anything other than photos or videos, but I have to tell you, it's quite something to see them in person. It's as if they were the first solar buildings, as they heat up with the sun and even change color with the sun. There is a pueblo not far outside of the center of town where Native Americans lived for centuries that's entirely built out of adobe. It's not only gorgeous to look at, but it's an engineering marvel when one considers the so-called technology that was available at the time.

The Art

I never knew this about Taos, but it's a smaller city that's very dedicated to nurturing the artist community that lives there. There were several galleries within a few-block radius, and I think I walked through almost all of them. The paintings were especially intriguing to me, as quite a few of them literally painted a picture of what life used to be like in this part of the world. I actually bought a few small pieces for myself, as they were too gorgeous to pass up. If you want to see a community where artists feel at home, Taos is the place.

The Dining

After seeing all that history and all of that natural beauty, I was ready for a real southwestern dinner. I heard about a place that made some great locally-inspired meals, so I was in. The building itself was nothing fancy, but the food was out of this world. I had Mayan-style pork, and it was seasoned in a way that I have never tasted it. I ate all of it quickly, and almost ordered more. The drinks were also very tasty and added a lot to the overall experience.

HotelTonight – Taos Hotels at the Ready

After that meal, I wanted to get some sleep. I opened the HotelTonight app on my phone and booked a Taos hotel room in seconds. It was just up the road, so I grabbed my bag out of my car, walked over, checked in and fell asleep almost immediately. It had been a great day.
