HotelTonight – Covington, LA Hotels at the Ready

There's something about driving through rural Louisiana that I find utterly mesmerizing. I live on the East Coast, so just the landscape around me is so different than what I'm used to I find myself admiring it for hours while behind the wheel. I've been traveling through this part of the country for a while now for my job, and I always look forward to seeing this part of the world. The geography is lovely, the food is fantastic and the people are incredibly nice. My only regret is that I never have time to stop between destinations and explore a community. On my last trip through Louisiana, I got that chance finally. I got a call early one morning while driving from Gulfport, Mississippi to Baton Rouge telling me that my day of meetings had been canceled. I happened to be near a place called Covington, so I decided to explore there for the day. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I always travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd use it to book a Covington, LA hotel room as soon as I needed one later that day.

Downtown

I pulled directly into the downtown area of Covington, a city of just over 10,000 people. I was definitely pulling into what could have been a postcard for quintessential Louisiana, as the area was almost completely built in that old, French-inspired architectural style that you see in parts of New Orleans and almost nowhere else outside of the state. It's really a lovely theme to see, what with the second-story patios, arches, pillars and old bricks. The people, who were milling about, all seemed quite familiar and comfortable with each other, and all of them were incredibly friendly towards me.

The Parks

After walking around downtown, I decided to stay outside for the remainder of the day, because the sun was shining, there was a nice breeze and I was enjoying the fresh air. As luck would have it, I saw several different parks nearby, and I walked through a couple of them. Like almost anything else, parks in this part of the country are unique. The trees are lovely and almost eerie to experience, the wilderness is quiet and the people out there were enjoying their surroundings. I was told to keep an eye out for alligators and made sure to listen.

The Dining

When I'm in Louisiana, I want food that's home-cooked and local in flavor. A lady at the park told me about such a place in town, so that's where I went for dinner. The place looked like one of those classic Louisiana homes from the outside, which was inviting. I went in and ordered some hush puppies, which were sublime, and some fried shrimp for dinner. If you've never had shrimp that were so fresh that they were caught that day, Covington is the place to do so.
