During a recent trip across the Midwest, I was feeling tired after spending hours on the road. I decided to take a break and pulled off the highway in Grinnell, Iowa. I'd never been in the town before and decided to take the chance to explore the town that is nicknamed the jewel of the prairie. The Area
The town of Grinnell is located in Poweshiek County in southeastern Iowa. It's a small town with a population of just over 9,000, but there's so much to see and do it's a great place to spend a day. Grinnell is located near the English River. The town is home to Grinnell College and is filled with great things to see and do. As I pulled into town, I could tell I was going to enjoy my day in town and couldn't wait to see what Grinnell had to see and do.
Things to Do
I decided to start my day in Grinnell by visiting the Louis Sullivan Jewel Box Bank. The building was designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan, and I loved seeing the beautiful building and getting to experience an important piece of architectural history. The building was built more than 100 years ago and, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the state. When I'd finished touring the building I headed to a nature preserve in Grinnell. The land was beautiful and it was so nice to be able to experience the outdoors and relax for a bit.
The Food
I wanted to try the best food that Grinnell had to offer, so I asked some locals and was directed to a great little restaurant in town. The place featured classic American fare and exciting new American dishes. I ordered a grilled sirloin that was perfectly prepared. The meal started with a salad and my sirloin came with a baked potato. Everything was delicious, and the restaurant had great service. I'll make sure to tell my friends to check out the restaurant if they are ever in town. It's a great place to eat and was a perfect way to cap off my day in town.
