I travel to Omaha quite a bit for business. I enjoy it there, as the people are incredibly nice, and there's always somewhere good to eat near my hotel. However, during my last few business trips there I started to wonder what was on the other side of the river. I knew it was Iowa, but that was all I knew. I became more and more curious about what it was like to live in that type of community, as my work schedule was always so tight that there was never any time for anything other than meetings and meals. On my last trip to Omaha, though, that all changed suddenly. I got a call on my last full day there – I was set to fly out the next morning – telling me that my meetings were canceled that day. I decided to keep my flight and to go see that place across the river known as Council Bluffs, Iowa. I wasn't worried about finding a place to stay, as I travel with HotelTonight. The Outdoors
As much as Omaha is the typical big city in terms of its pace of life, the noise and the general bustle, Council Bluffs immediately seemed like something different. There was a more relaxed pace of life here, and I wanted to do just that by enjoying the beautiful day of sunshine. I found a hiking trail near the center of town and jumped on it. Before I knew it, I was covered by trees that almost blocked out the sun, I was walking past creeks and little bodies of water that were filled with wildlife and I was really enjoying myself.
The Railroad Museum
There was a time in history when most of the country was connected not by highways, but by railroads. Iowa was a major player in that mode of transportation. That's probably why there was a Union Pacific Railroad Museum there, and I wanted to stop in and check it out. I wound up spending a couple of hours there, taking in all of the exhibits from the old railroad days and talking to some of the people who worked there. I noticed that the other visitors there at the time were mostly locals.
The Dining
All day long, I had been hearing about a pizza place that was fantastic when I asked people about dinner options. I decided to give it a shot, and when I got there I found a brick building that looked more like an old schoolhouse. The pizza itself was really, really good. It was shaped like a square instead of a circle, and it was loaded with cheese, sausage and mushrooms just the way I like it. I ate way more of it than I should have, but I couldn't help myself.
