HotelTonight – Book Ames Hotels at the Drop of a Hat
I had been in Des Moines for a series of business meetings and found myself with a free day after the last day of meetings were canceled. Instead of just heading home, I wanted to make the most of my day and decided to head to nearby Ames and spend the day exploring the city. I'd never been to Ames, but had heard it was a great place to visit, so I was looking forward to a day in town. I knew finding a place to stay wouldn't be a problem thanks to the HotelTonight app.
The Area
Found in Central Iowa, Ames is 30 miles north of Des Moines and is home to Iowa State University. The town is part of the Ames-Boone Combined Statistical Area and is home to more than 60,000 residents. Two waterways run through the town, with the Skunk River and Squaw Creek making their way through the city. Despite its small population Ames has an exciting feel to the city and is a great place to visit for anyone passing through Central Iowa.
Things to Do
I started my day in Ames off with a visit to a brewery in town. It was really fun, and I got a tour of the place and learned a bit about the brewing process. After that, I headed to a local art museum which has rotation displays as well as several permanent exhibits. It was a great way to enjoy the culture and appreciate some of the local art. After the museum, I headed to the Reiman Gardens. The gardens feature a butterfly garden and beautiful flowers. It was so nice to see all the flowers while being able to enjoy the nice weather.
The Food
One of the things I like doing when I visit a new town, is eating at a place the locals love. So I asked for some suggestions and several people mentioned I try a place called Hickory Park, a local family owned BBQ restaurant. I ordered a smokehouse link sandwich and, as soon as I took the first bite, I was so glad I decided to eat there. The food was amazing and every bit as good as I'd heard. I'll make sure I eat there again during my next trip to Ames.

After dinner, I was feeling tired and decided it was time to get a hotel and relax for the night. In the past, I've had problems finding a place to stay at the last minute, it can be expensive and frustrating. However, thanks to the HotelTonight app I knew I had nothing to worry about. That night, as I relaxed in the hotel, I thought back on my day in Ames and was so glad I had decided to spend the day in town.
