When I drive through the central portion of Illinois, I tend to get a bit lost in my thoughts. That's because I'm surrounded by bucolic beauty for hours at a time. There's something peaceful to me about driving through flat, yellow cornfields and enormous tracts of farmland. I don't know what it is, but I know that I'm always ready to go whenever I get out of my car in Chicago or St. Louis or some other city. However, that also means that over the years, I've come to all but ignore some of the communities that I zoom past in the middle part of Illinois. That all changed on my last drive through the Land of Lincoln. Something went wrong with my car, and I had to take it to a mechanic in Bloomington. They were very nice and told me they'd need it for the rest of the day. It'd be ready to go in the morning. I decided to make the best of it and explore this community. The Museums
Bloomington is clearly a place that's dedicated to history on different levels. I realized that when I pulled into town and saw museums in several places. I decided to tour two of them. My first stop was the aviation museum, which was fascinating because of all of the different planes and other artifacts that were present, dating to when we first started to fly. The history museum offered me a nice look at what life was like both before and after settlers came to this part of the world. It was a great way to spend a morning.
The Zoo
It was a beautiful day, and I wanted to see something different. I heard about a local zoo that had won rave reviews over the years, so I decided to check it out. It was a small zoo in size, but what it may have lacked in acreage it certainly made up for in interesting animals. I saw creatures from every continent on the planet, and I was really impressed both by how clean the zoo was and how well cared for the animals appeared to be. I also noticed that nearly everyone there was a local.
The Cuisine
More than once when talking to people that day, I heard about a really good local pizza place that I simply had to try. When dinnertime arrived, that's what I did. I'm glad I made that choice. The restaurant itself was not going to win any awards for decor, but I've found those to be the best pizza places. I ordered the Hawaiian, and it was sublime. The crust was clearly homemade as was the sauce, and the cheese melted perfectly and added to the flavor of the ham and pineapple.
