HotelTonight – La Mesa California Hotels

Southern California is much more than the beach and the surf. It's a compilation of countless communities large and small in size, and you could spend years exploring all of these places and still not come close to truly experiencing all of them. I have been traveling to and from Southern California, and San Diego County in particular, for a long time now, mostly because of work. Whenever I get the chance to spend some time exploring a new place in the area, I do whatever I can to make the most of that opportunity. On my last trip to San Diego County, I wound up facing a 24-hour layover. Rather than sit at the airport and hope that I would be able to finagle my way onto a flight at some point, I decided to take that 24 hours for myself. I wanted to explore the community known as La Mesa. I had never seen it before, but I had met people from there and was intrigued. I also wasn't worried about finding lodging, as I travel with my HotelTonight app. I'd book a La Mesa hotel room as soon as it was time.

The Landscape

One of the most interesting things about Southern California, including the tapestry of communities, is how different the landscapes can be in these different places. While La Mesa is fewer than 10 miles from downtown San Diego, the geography is totally different. La Mesa is surrounded by and largely exists inside of foothills that surround the San Diego metro area. It creates a unique look that almost feels like a bit of elevation is involved. It also provides the opportunity for a lot of viewpoints of the San Diego, the coastline and the mountains. It stands out quite a bit.

The Park

One of the biggest landmarks – and it's a natural one at that – in La Mesa is Mount Helix. It's the highest point in the city of just under 60,000 and a lot of it is put to use for the public good. You can hike up and down by way of paths and there's also a park with the same name. This park is also beautiful, and it provides a lot of fun for people of basically all ages. I spent a lot of time walking around and talking to people, and everyone was happy with where they lived.

The Cuisine

One thing that's plentiful in La Mesa, as it is in Southern California overall, is the fresh produce. I heard about a place that's been a staple in the community for years, and its specialty was serving fresh produce and other types of dishes that are as locally sourced as possible. I had a salad that popped with both flavor and color, and I had a pizza that was so full of toppings I couldn't believe how the whole thing stayed in one piece.
