I was in the town of Des Moines for a week-long series of meetings. When the last meeting was over, I was feeling stressed and really wanted to relax before I headed back home. I decided to push my flight home back a day and spend one day exploring the city to see what Des Moines had to offer. This was my first time in the city, and I was looking forward to enjoying the sights of the city. It had been a long time since I had a day to myself, and I couldn't wait to see the city. I wouldn't have a problem finding a place to stay in Des Moines, even on short notice, thanks to the easy to use HotelTonight app. That left me free to enjoy a fun and relaxing day in town.
Des Moines is located in central Iowa and is the state capital, as well as the most populous city in the state. It is easily one of the most exciting cities in the Midwest and is filled with so many things to see and do. The Des Moines River runs through the city and gives the area a beautiful scenic feel. The city is also a hub for the arts in the area. It is home to several museums and is a popular stopping place for bands who are touring in the Midwest. It's also home to Drake University and to two University of Iowa satellite campuses. I hadn't spent much time in Des Moines before this trip, but I could tell that it was going to become one of my favorite places to visit. The city gives off an exciting and trendy feel, and I couldn't wait to start exploring the town and taking in some of the sights.
Things to Do
I was amazed at how many things Des Moines had to see and do. The city is easily one of the most exciting places in the Midwest and is full of activities and things to see. The day I was in town happened to be the day that the farmer's market is held downtown, so I started my day off with a drip there. It was really fun to just walk around and get a taste of the local area. After that, I decided to head to the Des Moines Art Center. The art center is located in a beautiful part of the city near a park and is full of great exhibits. I wish I could have had more time at the art center to fully appreciate everything there. There was so much to see, it definitely warrants another visit during my next trip to Des Moines. Next up on my list of things to do in Des Moines was visit the East Village. I'd heard a lot about the area and wanted to check it out for myself. It was great, and I was so glad I decided to go. Located on the banks of the river the East Village is full of restaurants, bars and shops. Everything is located within walking distance, and it is one of the most lively part of the city. I wish I could have had more time in Des Moines, because there were several other things I wanted to see in town. I'll be sure to come back to the city soon.
Whenever I am in a new city, I always like to try the best of the local fare, so I asked some locals where the best place to get something to eat was. Several people recommended I try a little place called Skip's, so I headed there for dinner. As soon as I walked in, I was glad I decided to eat at Skip's. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere of the restaurant was great, and everything on the menu looked delicious. I ordered some lemon and garlic shrimp pasta, and it was amazing. I loved the food and would have loved to try some of the other great looking dishes on the menu. Getting dinner at Skip's was the perfect way to cap off my day in the city.
