When you travel for work as much as I do, you tend to wind up in a lot of places that you never expected to see. I'm constantly driving around the United States, and I'm sure that if I had a dollar for every little town I passed through or by on my way to some other destination, I'd no longer be traveling for work. Not too long ago, I was driving from Cedar Rapids, Iowa up to La Crosse, Wisconsin. I got a call that my meetings for later that day had been canceled, so I'd have the rest of the day to myself. My initial thought was that I'd just drive up to La Crosse and take it easy, but then I realized that this was my chance to spend some time in one of these small cities that I had passed by so many times in the past. I was coming up to a place called Prairie du Chien in Wisconsin, and that sounded intriguing to me for some reason. I figured I'd stop there for the day. The History
Even though it's not highly publicized or all that well-known in general, a lot of history happened in this part of the world. The first place I went brought me back to a time when things were completely different. The Fort Crawford Museum was a military fort in the 19th Century. The fort itself is no longer there, but the old hospital ward is as are several other spaces that are now really interesting exhibits. I spent a couple of hours touring the place and would recommend it to anyone.
The Art Gallery
After spending some time on the past, I wanted to get a feel for the local culture. One of the best ways to do that is to walk through an art gallery, particularly if that gallery features local artists. There's a place in Prairie du Chien that does just that, and it was another fantastic experience. The paintings were very nature-oriented and there were some other crafts and antiques around. I wound up purchasing a few items for myself and for others in my life, and if I'm ever in this area again I'm going back there.
The Dining
Wisconsin takes its cuisine seriously. Every town, so I'm told, has a specific place where the locals go to enjoy themselves with a feast. I heard about a place like that while I was talking with some folks at the art gallery. I gave it a shot. I had the steak and shrimp, and it was delicious. The steak was pure meat and juice – no frills. The peel-and-eat shrimp were tasty and a bit crunchy. The mashed baked potato that came with it completed the entire meal.
