One of the most interesting things about British Columbia, aside from its stunning beauty, is its many contrasts that are present. You can spend one day in one of the most modern and beautiful large cities in the world in Vancouver, talking to people from nearly every point on the globe. The next day, you can be somewhere completely remote that seems to have never seen any type of human intervention. I've traveled all over both the United States and Canada, and I've never really seen anything quite like that in the US. The only thing that I regretted slightly was that I was always in British Columbia for work and never had much of a chance to spend time in these remote regions. I had driven through them, but hadn't ever stopped there for more than gas or a quick bite. On my last trip, I decided to change that. I stayed over a weekend so I could get one full day off the beaten path. I wanted to see a place called Williams Lake. The Lake
It should be obvious how this city of just over 10,000 people got its name. The lake is the lifeblood of this community in more ways than one, and those who live around here definitely make the most of their water-inspired recreational opportunities. I went immediately to the shore to look at things when I got to town, and I saw boats, jet skis, kayaks, swimmers and just about everything else you could think of dotting the top of this beautiful, calm lake. I saw quite a few fishermen as well, which made sense as there were tackle shops near town.
The Hiking
Those that built this city not only made it easy for residents to enjoy the lake, but also for people to enjoy the shore along the lake. I found a beautiful walking trail that ran along the shoreline, and I spent a good couple of hours traversing it before deciding to turn back. I took dozens of photos of the valley that sits between the majestic mountains in the distance, the birds that call the lake and nearby marshes and reservoirs home and the people who come together to put out the friendly, happy vibe that exists here.
The Dining
For whatever reason, I felt like a pizza for dinner. Someone on the trail told me about a place that had been serving locals for a lot of years, so I decided to go there. It was an old-time pizza parlor, and you chose your crust type and your toppings. I went with the traditional crust and just about everything they had for toppings. It was a delicious pie, and you could tell that everything they put in front of you had been made fresh that day and in that place.
