HotelTonight – British Columbia Hotels in Vernon
When people think of British Columbia, Canada, at least based on my experience, they tend to think of Vancouver and mountains for the most part. Those are both extremely valid images to have appear in one's mind, as both Vancouver and the mountains of BC are breathtakingly beautiful. However, there is an entirely different part of British Columbia with which a lot of people are not familiar. This part of BC is known as "The Interior" to people who live there. It's in the central part of the province and it's a totally different world from Vancouver and other western areas in BC. I hadn't gotten to spend much time there until recently, when some work ventures brought me to the area. On my last trip, I decided to try to extend things out by 24 hours to pick a place in the area and spend that time there exploring. The place I chose is a city known as Vernon. It seemed interesting for several different reasons, and I wasn't worried about finding a Vernon hotel room, either, as I always travel with HotelTonight. I'd secure lodging when the day was done, and I was ready for some sleep.
The Fruit
British Columbia is full of surprises, and one thing that I wasn't expecting when I got to Vernon was the plethora of fresh fruit that was available along the side of the road. It was late summer, so the harvest was on and everyone who grows food was looking to move some product. I think I ate more fruit than I had in years, as the fresh peaches and cantaloupes in particular were bright orange, huge and literally exploding with juice. I saw a bunch of kids grab a cantaloupe, cut it open and fill the middle with ice cream. That's how they do it in Vernon.
The Beach
Yet another surprise with regards to Vernon occurred when I stumbled upon a lovely beach. I was aware that there are a lot of bodies of water in the area, but there were also beaches all over the place. The one that I found was particularly pristine. It was filled with locals of all ages doing all different types of things. Some were paddle-boarding while others were tooling around on their jet skis. Still others were happy to make sandcastles and soak up the warm sun that dominates The Interior during the summer.
The Dining
My final surprise arose when I realized that I could pick just about any country in the world and find a restaurant in Vernon that served that cuisine. I decided to keep it simple and go with some pub-type comfort food. I made a good choice. There were all sorts of local beers on tap in this place that looked almost like a German bier hall. I had a burger and fries that were very good, and the conversation with the locals was even better. It was a very pleasant evening.
