There are so many interesting things about British Columbia that it's difficult to even keep track of some of them, let alone all of them. One of them, however, is that you don't need to go very far in a linear sense to wind up somewhere completely different than where you were just a short while earlier. For instance, I had been traveling to Vancouver for business for years. I had gotten to know the city quite well from the perspective of someone who doesn't live there, and I was always happy to head back to one of the most beautiful communities in the world. Unfortunately, my work schedule was always so packed that I never had a chance to get outside the city much. That changed on my last trip there. A litany of circumstances led to me having 24 hours to myself for some reason, and I decided to travel a relatively short distance – about 45 miles – to the Sunshine Coast. I had to see this place for myself. I wasn't worried about finding a Sunshine Coast, BC hotel room either, as I always travel with HotelTonight. I'd book a room as soon as I needed one.
Getting There
One of the more unique aspects of this part of the world is that taking a car ferry is just a normal part of life. People take them back and forth across the Strait of Georgia every day to Vancouver Island, but I wasn't leaving the mainland of BC. I was just heading north from Vancouver. Regardless, I still had to take a short ferry ride of 40 minutes to get to the Sunshine Coast, and it was a pleasurable and comfortable ride, complete with a nice lounge chair, a newspaper, a cup of coffee and stunning scenery all around.
The Stunning Landscape
While the Sunshine Coast runs for over 100 miles along the coast of BC, only about 25,000 people live there permanently. That means that you're going to see a lot of wilderness when you're there. I don't know how many times I nearly drove off the road because I was so mesmerized with the canopy of huge trees, the incredible rock formations that fell into pristine streams and rivers and the untouched landscape overall. I could have gotten lost here for days and never once regretted it. I wasn't even worried about finding civilization for the next several hours.
The Dining
I was so overcome by the beauty of this place that I almost didn't want to eat. However, I had to do something, so I stopped at a gas station and asked for a recommendation. I was told about this place that was casual but that served good, solid meals. Sounded perfect to me. The place was not fancy – it had a wooden floor and plain, wooden tables and chairs, but the fish and chips that I had were fantastic. It was served in a bowl and sat on top of crumpled newspaper lining.
