Vancouver, British Columbia is not only one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse cities in the world, it's also one of the most beautiful and most welcoming to people from all over the globe. That's why the metropolitan area has experienced such a remarkable period of growth during the 21st Century. Millions of people have moved to Vancouver and to nearby communities, and based on recent trends it doesn't appear that this phenomenon is going to slow down anytime soon. I've been to Vancouver for work several times, and while I've always been mesmerized by it's beauty, I also regretted the fact that I never got a chance to get to know the communities that surround it. I wanted to see what it was like to live there. On my last trip, I decided to carve out an extra 24 hours for myself if such a step was possible. Fortunately for me, it was, and I decided to spend those 24 hours in Burnaby. The Growth
When I got into Burnaby I stopped at a coffee shop to get my bearings. It was obvious that this was a bustling community that was larger than I had originally thought. I got to talking with a local who told me that at the turn of the century, fewer than 200,000 people lived there. At this point, the population was growing and approaching 250,000 residents. That's a large jump in the number of people, and it was obvious that construction of homes, condos and apartments was happening at a rapid pace to accommodate everyone who was moving there.
The Diversity
Given the growth of this emerging community, it shouldn't come as a surprise that people from all walks of life are living here. Walking around in town and talking to people led me to understand that a lot of people who grew up in Vancouver live here now because it's more affordable. In addition, thousands of people from different parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East call Burnaby home, as evidenced by all of the different ethnic grocery stores and other retail outlets that you see lining the streets. This diversity may be a reason why Burnaby felt like such a close-knit community.
The Dining
Despite all of the influences from different parts of the world, I felt like a "northwest" dinner. I wanted some fresh salmon. A nice lady at one of the shops I strolled through told me about a somewhat overlooked place that had been there for years. I walked in and ordered the fresh salmon, which they cooked in soy sauce and brown sugar. It was like candy on a plate. The fresh produce that they put in the side salad was also quite scrumptious, completing a fantastic meal.
