British Columbia is a Canadian province that seems to offer a bit of something for everyone. Of course, you'll need a pretty healthy amount of time to explore all of it as it is also enormous. I had been to Vancouver many times for work, and during those trips I noticed that there were a lot of different communities near Vancouver that were thought of as separate from the big city itself. Unfortunately for me, I had never really had any time to explore any of these places. On my last trip, however, it turned out that I had an entire extra day to myself due to a scheduling mistake. I was always happy to spend time in Vancouver, but this time I wanted to do something different. I wanted to check out one of these outlying communities. Specifically, I wanted to explore Abbotsford. I would spend my day there looking at things in hopes of getting an idea of what it's like to live there. I wasn't concerned about finding lodging there, either, as I always travel with HotelTonight. The Hiking
Abbotsford may be a somewhat populated community of just under 150,000 people and it's near an enormous city in Vancouver, but that doesn't mean that the city planners have lost sight of the biggest asset in British Columbia, which is the scenic landscape. I wanted to see the city from different perspectives and not through a car window, so I got on my shoes and made use of the 60-plus miles of hiking trails that run in and around the city. I spent hours looking around, down and towards the skyline, the city in general and the mountains in the distance.
The Shopping
After hiking around for all that time, I was ready to get back into town and see what the city life was all about. I ventured downtown and was hoping to do some shopping. What I found was a community that seems to really value small businesses and local ownership. There were little boutiques and retail outlets everywhere, and I walked through several of them, talking to the owners and employees. It turns out that it's no accident that there is a dearth of worldwide chain stores here, as the people want to support their own community.
The Cuisine
I wanted something local for dinner after enjoying such a locally-focused day to that point. I was told about a farm-to-table restaurant nearby that served only local ingredients. I walked in and was greeted immediately and seated at a very nice table. I ordered a salad and could have made that its own meal, as the vegetables were enormous and tasty. I had the snapper for dinner, and it could not have been tastier, having been cooked in some sort of tangy marinade that made the whole dish. It was a wonderful dining experience.
